PROBLEMS WITH NYC GOVERMENT

06/16/2008

Alair Townsend has done it again. In her latest article in Crain’s New York Business , she has outlined everything that requires fixing at the New York State legislative level in her typical, pithy style.

Her article, entitled “Putting Our Wrath Where the Money Is,” highlights the wonderful benefits of “term limits” for New York City politicians. Although they do have some issues, term limits have historically resulted in a more open style of government and less “clubbiness” in NYC politics. Many of the issues and problems that face the New York State Assembly and Senate generally do not exist in the New York City council.

If you want to help our wonderful city and state, write to your local Assemblyman and State Senator and enclose a copy of this article. Tell the Assemblymen and Senators to vote down the bills described in the last 4 paragraphs of this article, dealing with:

·
Providing New York City nurses and midwives the right to retire as young as age 50.

·
Permitting City workers to retire at age 55 instead of 62, for no valid reason at all.

·
Legislation that would make it impossible to reduce liberal medical insurance provided to public retirees.

Although these perks sound great for public service employees, you and I and every other citizen of this state pays for these indulgences.

If New York is to remain a competitive city and state, then bills such as these must be defeated.

Alair Townsend, please keep up the good work. -- Edward E. Klein
