Union's Benefits': Taxpayer's Dime

04/01/2008

CRAIN’S has reported many times in the past about our State legislators handing out various health benefits and other perks for union retirees at the expense of local city/municipalities.

State legislators continue granting these benefits at the expense of local business interests, including the real estate industry. In many cases, they leave payment of the “bill” with New York City citizens.

This is bad for our industry because it raises the cost of doing business in New York to unsustainable levels. New York City has the second highest rate of taxation of any major metropolitan area in the United States because of our profligate legislators.

It is time to stand up and make your voice count. Write to Joseph Bruno the titular head of our State Senate www.senate.ny.us. You should also write to Mr. Sheldon Y. Silver, the head of our Democratically controlled State Assembly at www.assembly.state.ny.us.

Tell them its time to stop soaking business interests in New York State to pay for needless spending on behalf of unions and other special interests.

Our legislators will only respond to the pressure brought to bear on them. -- Edward E. Klein
